Silent Hill: Shattered Memories – Please don’t screw this up

by Tara

For those of you who don’t know, it was recently announced that Konami will be re-telling the orginal Silent Hill  story in a new game coming out this fall on Wii, PSP, and PS2. Silent Hill: Shattered Memories has been called a remake by some, but I don’t really want to call it that. They aren’t making the same game just with better graphics…. It isn’t a direct port… They are changing how some characters in the game react with Mason… It really isn’t the same game, and this scares me.

Let me tell you a story, once upon a time there was a little girl who was buying her first game on the original Playstation. On a trip to Walmart with her dad and her brother, she stared longingly at of the different games in the case before. Her father had told her she could only have one game so she needed to choose wisely. After studying each title, she finally chose a game named Tomb Raider.

The young girl took the game home, and the more she played it, the more she loved it. It became one of her favorite games and held it in high regard. As the years passed, the Tomb Raider games lost the luster of the original. They were simply unable to touch the first game’s former glory. The young girl grew up, and grew apart from her once beloved Tomb Raider.

The girl, now a young adult, eventually went off to college and got a job to help pay rent. She worked at a store called “GameStop” where they sold video games. One day while working there, she saw something, an amazing new game – Tomb Raider Anniversary! It was advertised as a remake for the original! Oh, how grand! The girl couldn’t wait. The day is came out, she bought the game and took it home.

Sadly, things went down hill from there. The new studio in charge of the game had concluded that they could make the game “better.” They added new features, changed the controls…. pretty much made a different game that didn’t even feel like the original. The girl was crushed. She could have adjusted to new features if the game had at least felt like the old one, but it didn’t. From that moment on the girl developed a deep loathing for all who claimed to remake a game, fearing that all those who claimed  “remake” would make a completely different game with the exact same story line as the previous title.

If you haven’t guessed already, that young girl was me. I feel like the announcement of a Silent Hill re-whatever is something I am all to familiar with. I love the Silent Hill series, I own all of them… and yeah, I will probably by this one too because it has “Silent Hill” on the cover. But, unlike my experience with Tomb Raider, I am not going to assume that I will love this game as much as I have loved the original. I really hope that this game does well, I really do. I really want this to be an awesome game… but I hope the changes they are making don’t take away from what Silent Hill should feel like. And no, I’m not even going to talk about this game for the Wii. That blows my mind, and I don’t think it’s in a good way.

So, Komai, please don’t mess this up. Please don’t ruin one of my all time favorite games. I am waiting for this title, but I’m a bit  nervous. Please, please do the original justice. I’m just hoping that by setting low standards for this game I will be pleasantly surprised.
